Dear
Paul,
Thank you
for your e-mail regarding the protection of our First Responders. I recognize
the men and women who work in First Response are an important part of our
community, and I will advocate for a more comprehensive approach to supporting
them and their families.
It is
unfortunate that the Harper government has failed to provide compensation to
the families of first responders who are killed or permanently disabled in the
line of duty, eliminated critical funding from Heavy Urban Search and Rescue
Teams (HUSARs), and failed to invest adequately in first-responders’ mental
health needs.
A Liberal
government will create an indexed Public Safety Officer Compensation Benefit
(PSOC) valued at $300,000 for the families of deceased or permanently disabled
firefighters, police officers and paramedics, as well as invest $1.6 million
per year in HUSARs. We will also ensure the highest quality mental health care
is available to first responders.
We ask
first responders to stand in harms’ way to protect us and keep us safe; they
deserve the highest level of support and care from their country and that is
exactly what they will get from a Liberal government.
Yours
Very Truly
Don
